NYC again beats Italy for world’s best pizza at this location

NYC pizza still reigns supreme — no matter how you slice it.

A Manhattan culinary staple has reclaimed the title of having the best pies in the world, usurping two southern Italian icons.

Una Pizza Napoletana of 175 Orchard Street — which took the title in 2022 and was named the best pizza pie in the U.S. last June for a third year running — completed the trifecta by being ranked number one globally by 50 Top Pizza this week.

Una Pizza Napoletana was just ranked as the world’s best.

Last year, Napoli’s 10 Diego Vitagliano and Caserta’s Francesco Martucci tied for first with Una Pizza Napoletana in second place. This year, the two locations tied again, this time in second place behind the Lower East Side champ.

“In a country always accustomed to putting everything on pizza, Anthony proposes only the purest tradition in toppings, with extraordinary quality ingredients,” the award site reads, noting owner Anthony Mangieri is known for Marinara, Margherita, Cosacca styles plus a rotating pie as well.

“It’s inspiring to be recognized for this 30 years into my career, especially in Naples where pizza originated,” the Jersey shore native and Yankees fan — who has moved locations of his storefront from New Jersey to San Francisco and later the Lower East Side in 2022 — told CNN Travel.

He maintains that the start of a good pizza originates from the dough. At Una Pizza Napoletana, there is a stressed effort to keep the core ingredient hydrated — and only in good hands.

“No one makes the dough in the restaurant, 25 years later, except for me,” Mangieri previously said.

“Every single pizza that people eat, I still make the dough in the morning myself.”

And, while Mangieri is grateful for the accolade, he’s still got a higher purpose behind the kitchen counter.

“The recognition is appreciated, but in the end, it’s not why I started and not why I continue to make every ball of dough we serve at Una after all these years,” he said.

“It fuels us to go into the restaurant every day and give more love and focus, and not to take anything for granted.”

Other honorable mentions in the top ten include Tokyo’s The Pizza Bar on 38th in third place; Confine in Milan, Italy in fourth; and Napoli on the Road in London, England ranked fifth.

Tony’s Pizza Napoletana in San Francisco got sixth place and I Tigli in San Bonifacio came in seventh. Rounding out the top 10 were Sartoria Panatieri in Barcelona, Spain, 50 Kalo in Naples and Seu Pizza Illuminati in Rome, respectively.

Locally, Ribalta near Union Square was 19, Don Antonio of Midtown was ranked 30th, and L’Industrie of Brooklyn — awarded as the best slice in the U.S. last June by the organization — took the 80th slot.
