Not all liberals are standing stoutly behind Vice President Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign. While the mainstream media has been reliably noting that Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez (D-NY), and other progressive darlings have praised the veep, left unsaid is the recent repeal of a Harris endorsement by one of the country’s most influential anti-Israel collectives.
The Uncommitted National Movement, which advocates for Palestinians and a cease-fire with Hamas, highlighted on X an announcement by a coalition of Muslim women for the Harris-Walz ticket pulling its support. Muslim Women for Harris-Walz has no direct affiliation with the campaign but until now had held out hope that the Democrat’s team would invite a Palestinian speaker to address the Democratic National Convention where thousands of protestors have gathered in Chicago. The decision to disband, the group said, came after receiving word that the Democratic Party was denying its request.

“We cannot in good conscience, continue Muslim Women for Harris-Walz, in light of this new information from the Uncommitted movement, that VP Harris’ team declined their request to have a Palestinian American speaker take the stage at the DNC,” read the statement on X. “The family of the Israeli Hostage that was on the stage tonight, has shown more empathy toward Palestinian Americans and Palestinians, than our own candidate or the DNC has. This is a terrible message to send to Democrats. Palestinians have the right to speak about Palestine. We pray that the DNC and VP Harris’ team makes (sic) the right decision before this convention is over. For the sake of each of us.”

The move is a blow to Harris’s hopes that she can deftly stitch back together a fraying coalition of progressive Jews and pro-Palestinians who have for decades existed within the Democratic Party. Hamas’ October 7th attack killing 1,400 Jews and taking hundreds hostage tore open the divide and brought back to the forefront a discussion about where and when is appropriate to advocate for Palestinians in light of the terrorist group’s action. Israeli counterstrikes, including some that have killed thousands of Gazans, have catalyzed a series of anti-Israel protests on college campuses this year as well as this week outside of the DNC.
During the Democratic state primary elections, the Uncommitted movement garnered as much as 15% of Democratic voters who opted against nominating President Joe Biden for a second term in some states. The protest vote reflected deep dissatisfaction with his continued support for arming Israel in its war, especially among younger, more progressive voters. After a tumultuous first day of protests which saw rioters break down a gate and flood into secured areas, DNC protestors remained generally peaceful by the third night. Still, their influence on the ticket has been felt; critics noted that Pennsylvania Gov. Joshua Shapiro, a devout Jew, was most likely removed from the search for a running mate due to fears that he would provoke further anger among pro-Palestinian coalitions.
