Fox News’ Jesse Watters said Monday on “The Five” that Democratic policies “set the condition” for President Donald Trump’s reelection and triggered a “ferocious backlash.”
With midterms approaching and speculation mounting over the 2028 race, Democrats appear to be struggling to rally behind a clear leader. Citing CNN data showing Trump’s early successes on immigration and tariffs, Watters argued Trump is essentially a reaction to Democratic Party leadership. “What is Newton’s third law of physics, Joey? This is not a quiz. I’ll answer the question,” Watters said. “Every action has an equal and opposite reaction, and it happens with politics too. FDR came in as a reaction to the Great Depression, unchecked speculation on Wall Street and these ruthless industrialists that were just hammering the working class. He came in and went way, way, way, way to the other side. Same thing with Trump.”
CNN Chief Data Analyst Harry Enten said Saturday that the U.S. is on track for net negative migration, something that hasn’t happened in “at least 50 years.” He also highlighted President Trump’s trade agenda, saying he “can’t think of a more influential president during this century” when it comes to tariff policy.

Trump’s fulfillment of his agenda follows record-high inflation, a surge in diversity, equity and inclusion policies, and historic border crossings under the Biden-Harris administration. Despite Democrats’ focus on cultural and social issues, voters’ top concerns by 2024 overwhelmingly aligned with Trump’s campaign promises.
“The Democrats set the conditions for Donald Trump: unchecked migration, unchecked globalism, unchecked discrimination, unchecked regulation. So he comes in as a reaction to kids’ genitalia being operated on, $20 million to Iraqi Sesame Street, censorship, weaponization. Trump is the backlash,” Watters added.
“So instead of fighting it like a dying insurgency, Democrats need to pause and think, ‘Why did we have such an unpopular agenda that created such a ferocious backlash?’” Watters asked. “And maybe come up with a different agenda that’s more popular next time that doesn’t create such a backlash.”
Recent polls from The Wall Street Journal, CNN, and Gallup have all reported that the party has hit record-low favorability. According to the WSJ’s poll, released on July 25, the survey found that 63% of voters have an “unfavorable view” of Democrats, with only 33% holding a favorable view of the party.
With their favorability sinking, speculation about the Democratic Party’s 2028 contender has grown after former Vice President Kamala Harris announced Wednesday she won’t run in her home state’s 2026 governor’s race. Harris said she’ll focus on a book tour for her new memoir about her brief presidential run. Party officials have reportedly already dismissed the idea of her running again.
