Crime in the District of Columbia became a hot-button issue after Eric Tarpinian-Jachym, an intern for Republican Rep. Ron Estes of Kansas, was fatally shot June 30. Two employees of the Israeli Embassy were killed in a May shooting, while Democratic Rep. Angie Craig of Minnesota was assaulted in her apartment in February 2023.
Trump, who floated the idea of a federal takeover of the district after Coristine was injured, announced the press conference would not just be about crime in a Sunday afternoon post on Truth Social.

The Federal Housing Agency (FHFA) referred James in April to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for allegedly falsifying mortgage documents to obtain more favorable loan terms.
FHFA Director Bill Pulte likewise referred Schiff to the DOJ in May for allegedly falsifying documents to secure more favorable terms on a Maryland property.
A spokesperson for Schiff told CNN in 2023 that his properties in California and Maryland were both claimed as primary residences “for loan purposes because they are both occupied throughout the year and to distinguish them from a vacation property.”

President Donald Trump removed Internal Revenue Service Commissioner Billy Long from his post Friday afternoon after less than two months on the job, according to a senior White House official.
The official, who was not authorized to speak publicly, did not state the reason for Long’s dismissal nor specify when he would depart the agency. The president has asked Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to serve as acting director of the federal bureau.
Bessent will notably be the president’s sixth IRS lead of his second term. The New York Times was first to report Long’s dismissal. Shortly after reports of his removal from the IRS, Long announced on X that he will be nominated as the U.S. Ambassador to Iceland.

The Trump administration reportedly fired Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Chief Billy Long for refusing to release tax information on illegal migrants, The Washington Post reported.
A deal was worked out in April between the Treasury Department — parent agency of the IRS — and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), two people familiar with the situation told The Washington Post. The IRS would send taxpayer data to verify the addresses of about 40,000 people DHS thinks are in the United States illegally.
DHS officials later suggested that they would eventually need tax information of about 7 million people thought to be in the U.S. illegally, The Washington Post reported. There are reportedly about 11 million illegal migrants in the U.S.
Privacy lawyers at the IRS objected to the data sharing, arguing that this information is confidential.
IRS officials responded to DHS Friday and said that they could provide less than 3 percent of the 40,000 listed names provided by immigration enforcement officials. These people had individual taxpayer identification numbers provided by DHS, which migrants often use in place of Social Security numbers on tax filings.
DHS said in a statement that the agreement with the IRS “outlines a process to ensure that sensitive taxpayer information is protected, while allowing law enforcement to effectively pursue criminal violations,” The Washington Post reported.
“After four years of Joe Biden flooding the nation with illegal aliens, these processes streamline pursuit of violent criminals, scrub these individuals from voter rolls, identify what public benefits these aliens are using at taxpayer expense, all while protecting American citizens’ safety and data,” the statement said.

Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton scored a legal victory Friday, securing a court order to block what he called “Beto Bribes” — a fundraising operation that he says bankrolled Texas Democrats who fled the state to block legislative action.
Paxton on Wednesday opened an investigation into Robert “Beto” O’Rourke’s group, Powered by People, over allegations it ran an illegal financial scheme to bribe Democrats who fled Texas to break quorum. Paxton took to social media to announce that the Texas district court granted Paxton a temporary restraining order against O’Rourke and Powered by People just hours after the state filed suit.
“I just defeated Beto O’Rourke in court. We secured a major victory stopping runaway Democrats from taking ‘Beto Bribes’ and preventing deceptive fundraising,” Paxton wrote.
The order halts all allegedly unlawful fundraising and spending while litigation proceeds. Paxton accused O’Rourke of running a “misleading financial-influence scheme” that used deceptive appeals to funnel donor money toward personal expenses for runaway Democrats rather than legitimate political activity.

Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly said he would halt his war in Ukraine if Kiev gave up vast swaths of its territory in the eastern part of the country, European and Ukrainian officials told The Wall Street Journal on Friday.
Putin reportedly presented the pitch to U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff on Wednesday, proposing that Ukraine cede the Russian-speaking Donbas region to Moscow in exchange for a halt to the fighting, according to the WSJ. President Donald Trump has been pursuing peace in the region since the beginning of his presidency, and the war is believed to have taken hundreds of thousands of lives on both sides since the conflict began in 2022.
