Canada’s liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau just wanted to thank his country’s steelworkers with some coffee and donuts but got more than he bargained for in a botched photo-op over the weekend.
The youthful 52-year-old received sharp glares from a trio of steelworkers as he touted a recent policy change implementing 25% tariffs on the products of Chinese competitors. He meekly offered the men a round of snacks before receiving an earful. “That’s gonna keep my job?” one man asked rhetorically. “What about the forty percent taxes I’m paying, and I don’t have a doctor?” Trudeau tried to carry on, mentioning a recent $400 million investment which “means you’re going to have a job.”

The worker didn’t let up. “I think you’re only around here for another year. We won’t see you around in probably another year,” he said while the cameraman snapped the painfully awkward conversation. “That’s what elections are for,” the prime minister replied. “I look forward to everyone exercising their right to vote. We’re going to invest in you and your jobs.” The worker quickly shot back, “I don’t believe you for a second.”
Trudeau tried to turn the conversation to dental care but again was rebuffed as the man told him he pays for his own out of pocket. “We’ve got four people in my family. Every time we go for a dental visit it’s costing me about $50 out of my pocket per person. Why? I have a good job. You’re not really doing anything for us, Justin.” Trudeau, his back to the camera, touted a recent program he claims allowed 500,000 Canadians to visit a dentist for the first time in over a year. “Probably like my neighbor that doesn’t go to work because she’s lazy,” the worker quipped. “She doesn’t go to work, she lives the same life I do?” It was at that point Trudeau tried to end the conversation. “Most Canadians try to stick up for each other, and that’s what we’re going to keep doing,” he replied.

As the leader of the nation’s Liberal Party, Trudeau will not face a referendum on his leadership until the House of Commons elections in October 2025. Most recent polling from June showed more than two in three voters disapproving of his leadership, according to pollster Angus Reid, with only a dismal 28% approving. Asked about the same results showing the country’s Conservatives having a 20-point lead over his party, Trudeau dismissed a journalist’s question, saying Canadians are not in “decision mode” yet about the far-off election. “What you tell a pollster, if they ever manage to reach you, is very different from the choice Canadians end up making in an election campaign,” he told CBC that same month.

Byelections in Toronto-St.Paul saw Conservative Don Stewart edge out Liberal Leslie Church 42.1% to 40.4%, a shocking result for a major metropolitan area of the country. Liberals also faced significant opposition from within their own ranks as progressive voters opted for New Democratic Party candidate Amrit Parhar, who received 11% of the vote.
Covid pandemic restrictions took a heavy toll on Trudeau’s popularity. Protests by truckers brought major national thoroughfares to a halt as they refused to deliver goods to major population centers, and on the left protestors chased Trudeau out of a restaurant last November, accusing the politician of having “blood on your hands” over his support for Israel’s war against Hamas. Shortly after, Tucker Carlson left Trudeau a cryptic voice message warning the Liberal leader that he would be kicking off a nationwide tour by American freedom fighters looking to embolden their northern neighbors.
“Tucker Carlson calling from the United States, and I’d be grateful if you passed a message on to the Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau: We are coming to liberate Canada. We are coming to liberate Canada, and we’ll be there soon. Merci!” he jokingly said two months later in a clip shared on X.
