The president of one of the nation’s largest labor unions suggested Saturday that the organization is close to announcing an endorsement in the 2024 presidential race.
During an appearance on CBS News “Face The Nation,” Teamsters President Sean O’Brien revealed that he has yet to sit down with Vice President Harris to discuss Union issues since President Biden announced his unprecedented decision to suspend his re-election campaign after the primary had concluded.
“Under our leadership, we’ve brought every single candidate to the table in front of our rank-and-file members and our general executive board, and we’re waiting on Vice President Harris to commit, to come meet with us,” O’Brien said.
O’Brien conceded that the Teamsters are a “very, very Democratic union,” though he is ultimately eager to endorse the candidate who will do the most for workers. He also noted that the union has a significant number of Republican members who are passionate about a number of social issues, such as gun rights.

“We want the opportunity to sit down with Vice President Harris O’Brien said. “You know, I said to someone the other day, you don’t hire someone unless you give them an interview. This is our opportunity to ask her about Teamsters-specific issues and also labor issues.”
Harris’ campaign is reportedly coordinating with the Teamsters in order to set up a meeting, CBS News reported.

In January, O’Brien announced that he sat for a “matter of fact” meeting with former President Trump during which the union put their “cards on the table.”
“He claimed he was, you know, 100%, supportive of unions, but historically, obviously, take a look back, and there’s certain issues that we have with him,” O’Brien said at the time.
In July, O’Brien made history when he became the first Teamsters president to speak at the Republican National Convention. In a rousing speech, O’Brien praised Republicans like Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) and vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance. He also thanked President Trump for opening the convention’s doors to organized labor and was well received by the convention crowd.
O’Brien’s decision to speak at the RNC has drawn the ire of Democratic pundits and elected officials. The Teamsters president did request to speak at the Democratic National Convention, though his request was denied for unknown reasons.
O’Brien has described the decision to snub the union as an “insult” to members.
While the Teamsters have long supported Democrats, O’Brien has left the door open to going in another direction, stating that “free rides” are over.
“Both sides come to us asking us for support. And you know if the situation isn’t right for our members, they’re not going to get the free ride that they’ve gotten under our previous administration, or anybody else,” he declared.
